Transformation of Work Through 3D Printing

FormaRea utilizes a combination of clay modeling and digital modeling. While clay modeling requires skilled technicians and can be affected by the operator’s circumstances, the introduction of 3D printing has led to shorter development times and reduced labor costs based on working hours.

Despite this, clay modeling is still used because solely relying on computer programs for design work can sometimes lead to overlooking the emotional or sensory aspects of the final product. To minimize this, FormaRea applies clay modeling only to one side of the actual vehicle to complete the shape with a high degree of precision.

This model is then scanned and converted into 3D data for 3D printing. As a result, working time is reduced, bilateral precision is improved, and detailed surface finishing becomes possible.

Formarea Designs and Produces Vehicle Exteriors Directly

Placing sculptural value at the forefront, FormaRea understands automotive history and engages in thorough historical research to directly design and produce vehicle exteriors. It can be defined as a Vehicle Styling Atelier that combines artistic sensibility with refined aesthetics.

“Through 3D printing, we were able to reduce the average six-month working period by over a month.
Looking ahead, if we omit the traditional clay modeling process for simple forms or products with low organic connection to the vehicle and go straight to digital data processing, we anticipate reducing overall development costs by about 20% and shortening development time by approximately 30%.”

Diverse Applications of 3D Printing.

Using 3D printers, FormaRea produced a product called LUFT for BMW motorcycles. The development took place alongside participation in a 3D printing specialist training program hosted by the 3D Printing Cooperative. Lincsolution’s 3DP expert led the plastic 3D printing training, offering in-depth instruction on the characteristics of plastic materials and post-processing. The program also included detailed training on using 3D scanners for quality inspection.

This valuable experience led to an ongoing relationship with Lincsolution, and the two companies have since collaborated on product production.

Lincsolution’s LINK SL-2300 (with a maximum build size of 2300 x 850 x 1000 mm) is capable of producing large or multiple parts simultaneously, offering high efficiency. Its proprietary recoating technology allows for rapid production, making it well-suited to FormaRea’s fast-paced development needs. These products are now being sold domestically and internationally via FormaRea’s online and offline stores.

Further Collaboration Underway

Formarea is currently working on an undercowl (belly pan) for the BMW motorcycle model R nineT. This project is also a result of the partnership with Lincsolution and is scheduled for release next month.

“Since we are still in the process of learning digital modeling, dimensional gaps or increased post-processing times may occur depending on the modeling quality. These challenges are being addressed in collaboration with Lincsolution. Moving forward, we aim to continue producing strong results and grow at a faster pace than traditional product development cycles.”
